Christmas in Winchester

The old capital of England and the location of our English immersion courses, is fast becoming the place to go to get yourself in the festive spirit. Winchester holds its own with any European destination for those in search of an authentic Christmas experience.

The Cathedral is at the heart of the city’s celebration, with its many Christmas services, a German Christmas market and an outdoor ice rink with its stunning backdrop. Founded in 2006, the Christmas Market is recognised as one of the best in Europe, renowned for its unique location, high quality exhibitors and bustling atmosphere. Wonderful Christmas gifts, decorations and festive food can be found in abundance.

To fuel the festive spirit, award-winning restaurants are serving up fine festive food to the locals and to the many visitors that Winchester receives all year round. Among the large variety of top restaurants in Winchester we can recommend The Wykeham Arms, The Hotel Du Vin & Bistro, Loch Fyne Restaurant and Oyster Bar, The Chesil Rectory and the Micheline starred The Black Rat (see below for our last visit with a student).

Winchester is also famed for its unique shopping atmosphere and at Christmas time, with the lights twinkling overhead, it comes into its own. A refreshing blend of independent shops, big-name retailers, department stores and regular street markets have their place in this historical city to make the experience one to remember.
